GED Florida | Your Guide To Obtaining Your GED in Florida FL

A Guide to the Florida GED

If you have been forced to put your career on hold or you are not able to advance in your educational goals because you don’t have a high school diploma, then you are going to enjoy this piece of news. You can earn a General Educational Development (GED) certificate that many employers and colleges treat just like a high school diploma. By passing a five-part exam, you will gain access to opportunities previously denied to you. Here is a short guide to the Florida GED.

How is the Exam Formatted?

The exam is broken up into five parts based on the topics high school students study in school. Those subjects are social studies, science, math, reading, and writing. The writing and the math tests have two parts. The writing portion requires you to answer multiple-choice questions and write an essay to test your writing skills. The math test has two parts. While the GED testing center will furnish you with a calculator, you can only use it on the first part of the math exam.

The test is 7.5 hours long. Many GED testing centers will let you take the test over multiple days.

How Do They Score the Florida GED Test?

The Florida GED follows the same scoring system as other state’s GED tests. Each part of the exam is worth between 200 and 800 points. You must score an average of 450 points per test but no less than 410, otherwise that portion of the exam will get a failing grade. You can retake the test up to three times each year and it is offered in English and Spanish.

Florida GED Eligibility Requirements

You must be at least 18 years old to take the Florida GED exam. If you are 16 or 17, you can still take the test but you must have an age waiver from the local school board. Only Florida residents can take the test and you cannot be enrolled in an accredited high school or have already obtained a high school diploma or equivalent.

The eligibility requirements may change over time. You should always check with your local GED testing site or the Florida Department of Education (www.ged.fldoe.org) for the most current requirements.

How Do I Register for the GED?

The Florida GED cannot be taken online; you must take the test in person at an official GED testing site. To register for the test, you must present a government-issued ID like a driver’s license and your social security card. Prior to taking the test, you do need to complete a GED demographic form. The cost of the GED exam varies between testing centers. However, the average is $75 for the complete exam and $15 for each individual part retaken.

How Do I Prepare for the Florida GED?

A popular way to prepare for the Florida GED is to take a preparatory course. These courses will refresh your knowledge of the subjects and improve your writing, reading, and math skills. You can take these classes at a community college or online. Another option is to study independently using GED guide books which can be purchased from bookstores online and offline. GED practice tests can be found online as well.
