According to the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, for over 150 yrs nurse anesthetists have been offering anesthesia care in the U.S. and are the oldest nurse specialty group in the country. In 1909 the first nurse anesthetists school was formed by Agnes McGee in Portland, OR at the St. Vincent’s Hospital. The training course was 6 months long, the tuition fee was $50 and the curriculum included administration of anesthetic agents, anatomy & physiology and pharmacology . The following decade, 19 more nurse anesthetist schools opened.
What is a nurse anesthetist?
A nurse anesthetist is a nurse who, in a operating room setting, treats, administer, and monitor patients who requires anesthesia during surgery. A certified registered nurse anesthetist is a registered nurse who has been specially trained through a graduate degree program to administer anesthesia. It is an interesting profession that can make you earn more but before enjoying the profession of being a nurse anesthetist, you need a Master’s degree to obtain certification, and acceptance to a reputable graduate school can be an advantage.
Nurse Anesthetist Schools
There are several good nurse anesthetist schools in Texas that offer training programs for registered nurses. However, before you enrol yourself, you must have a RN license. A Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) is preferable, but in some anesthetist training course, a simple bachelor’s degree in any medical-related course can be considered. At least a 1 yr of experience in medical-surgical ward or any acute care settings (i.e medical ICU) is also necessary to improve your resume for your nurse anesthetist school application.
Nurse anesthetists that graduate with a master’s degree may continue his or her education to the doctorate degree level, earning either a Ph.D or similar research doctorate, or a clinical/practice doctorate such as Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice (DNAP).
